What Should I Do in a Dental Emergency?
Dental problems can be painful and worrying. Getting appropriate advice promptly can help you understand what to do next.
Severe toothache
Toothache can have several causes, including decay, infection or damage to a tooth. Contact us for advice, particularly if the pain is severe, persistent or affecting your sleep.
While waiting for advice, avoid chewing on the affected tooth and avoid very hot or cold foods if they make the pain worse.
Broken, chipped or cracked tooth
If you break or chip a tooth, contact the practice for advice. If possible, keep any broken pieces and bring them with you.
Avoid biting down on the damaged tooth. A dentist will assess the damage and explain which treatment options may be suitable.
Swelling or a possible dental infection
Swelling around a tooth or gum may indicate an infection and should be assessed promptly. Contact a dentist urgently, particularly if the swelling is increasing or accompanied by fever or feeling unwell.
If you have severe swelling of the mouth, lips, throat or neck that makes breathing, swallowing or speaking difficult, call 999 or go to A&E immediately. Do not wait for a routine dental appointment.
Knocked-out tooth
A knocked-out permanent tooth needs urgent dental attention. Contact a dentist immediately.
Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline if available, without scrubbing it. If possible, keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva while seeking urgent advice. Do not reinsert a baby tooth.
Lost filling or crown
A lost filling or crown can leave a tooth sensitive or vulnerable to further damage. Contact us for advice on arranging an assessment. Avoid chewing hard foods on the affected side.
Bleeding after a dental procedure
If bleeding continues after a dental procedure, follow the aftercare instructions you were given and contact your dentist urgently for advice. If bleeding is heavy or will not stop, seek emergency medical help.
