What is teeth whitening?

We find ” What is teeth whitening? ” to be a commonly asked question and one we are happy to explain in greater detail.

It is a cosmetic procedure that helps to lighten teeth by removing stains and discolouration. These products can lighten stains that have always been present in a tooth since they developed as a child and stains that have built up within teeth over time.

What do we use when whitening your teeth?

Barron Dental’s whitening products contain carbamide peroxide. This is put onto teeth in the form of a gel. Different strengths of carbide peroxide teeth whitening gels do exist and the correct strength of product would be individually chosen for you after a consultation and full examination by one of our dentists.

All in the comfort of your own home.

At Barron Dental we offer whitening that is carried out in the comfort of your own home. After the initial consultation and examination your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to enable us to make custom made mouthguards for your top and bottom teeth. These mouthguards cover only the teeth and are comfortable and well tolerated by all our patients. The mouthguards are very thin and strong.

Each night you will put the whitening gel into the guard and place it over your teeth. You can then relax in bed and sleep with the guards in all night. This allows the whitening gel to work effectively over the course of a few hours to whiten your teeth. We typically advice you to use the whitening gel in the guards for 14 nights. Numerous studies have shown that the ‘at home’ professional whitening gels we offer at Barron Dental give you the best and longest lasting results possible.

How long does Teeth Whitening last for?

There is no way of stopping the colour of your teeth fading with time. Unfortunately, there are no products available to stop this natural fading of the colour of your teeth. The good news is that the ‘at home’ products we use mean the colour of your teeth should fade very slowly with time. Generally people wish to ‘top-up’ their whitening every 1-2 years. This generally involves using more whitening gel in the original mouthguards given to you for 3-5 days.

Is the procedure potentially damaging to my teeth?

Carbamide peroxide has been used by all dentists in the UK to whitening teeth for many years. Numerous studies have proven that peroxide is a product that is completely safe to use on teeth to help whiten them in a very effective way. It does not soften the teeth or strip any layers of the outside of teeth and does not cause any damage to the nerves within teeth.
